Using TLP, the sprite data can be viewed and edited, allowing you modify the existing graphics. cart data in the NES rom can be inspected visually using a program called Tile Layer Pro (TLP). Riggs demonstrates how all of the Super Mario Bros. But how do you change graphics in a game that already exists? To figure out this process, this youtube video by John Riggs was very helpful. project, an important part was to switch the Mario sprite into something that looked a bit more like me. For Mario things get a bit more complicated.Mario runs, jumps, crouches, swims, and becomes Super! Each of these actions need to be animated on screen in some way, while keeping within the NES restrictions on colour use and rom storage space.įor my Super Lupo Bros. When the Goomba walks across the screen, the sprite is flipped to animate a walking motion. Each character in the game uses a combination of tiles to draw and animate their movements, for example: a Goomba's sprite is composed of 4 tiles stacked two rows high and two columns wide. Each sprite-group can only use 4 colours, with one of those colours used for transparency. In terms of the NES, a sprite is just a drawing composed of a set of 8 by 8 pixel tiles. So, this blog post and the next is an attempt to corral all of this information in one place, not really to make a "how-to" guide, but to leave a strong trail of breadcrumbs for anyone else (or future me) who wants to do the same thing. The work of figuring all this out led to a number of interesting processes: sprite editing, palette swapping, title editing, and chip flashing. In it's presentation, the installation explicitly referenced a home gaming environment, in order to help facilitate a gallery goers participation with the game. This was an important aspect of the project, as I wanted the sense of playing the game to fit into a player's memories and feelings of nostalgia. For the exhibition Galaxy Champion FUN ZONE, the modified version of the game was loaded onto a cartridge and made playable in a real NES system. To that end, I edited a rom of the original game, in order to swap the Mario sprite with one that more closely resembles me. The impetus for this project was to take an example from my childhood video gaming experiences and insert my childhood back into that game. My first hi-larious project was to insert myself in Super Mario Bros. Old games for the Nintendo Entertainment System can be lightly hacked in order to change the sprites, sounds and more. I didn't do a very good job on this, but try to smooth out the Bondo as much as possible before it dries to make your life easier when sanding. Compared to the resin, Bondo is much easier to work with, so just follow the directions that come with it and use a Popsicle stick to apply it onto the helmet. The Bondo is used to sculpt details and shape the Pepakura. To fix this, I put the helmet in direct sunlight so it could warm up, and after a few minutes, the resin solidified.īondo is an automotive putty, and like the resin, it comes with a hardener. When you apply Resin in thin coats, it might not generate enough heat to turn into a solid. After searching for a while on THE RPF, I found out that the problem was the temperature. One obstacle I faced was that the resin was still wet after the drying time of 10-12 minutes. I really only used fiberglass on parts of the helmet that needed to be very durable, like the edges, the dome, and parts of the face. Putting too much fiberglass can cause you to lose details. You don't need to fiberglass the entire helmet. If you want, you could just stop at the second layer of resin, but I chose to strengthen it even more with fiberglass. Because of the quick working time of resin, it's impossible to do the entire helmet at one time. Mix the resin and the hardener according to the instructions that come with the resin, and use a paintbrush to apply the resin to the helmet. The polyester resin will come with a chemical hardener. Once everything is glued together, you'll need to use a material to strengthen the helmet, which is where polyester resin comes in handy. Use the numbers on the edges of the pieces along with the glue tabs to help you glue everything together.īE PRECISE! Even though you can fix some of the mistakes later with Bondo, you still want the helmet to be even and symmetrical. If you make a mistake with superglue, it's there to stay, but with hot glue, you can always unglue the pieces with the tip of the hot glue gun. I started gluing the helmet with superglue, but I switched to hot glue because it was easier to work with and more forgiving. Use the two types of dotted lines to guide you as you start to shape the helmet.(In some pep files, the mountain fold and valley fold line are switched, so beware!) When you're folding, use a ruler to help you fold the lines. " Mountain folds are folded downward to form an upside down "V" shape, and valley folds are folded upwards to form a "V" shape. Valley folds are represented by dashed lines, like this: "-" and mountain folds are represented by a dash-dot line, like this: ". In the land of Pepakura, there are two different kinds of folds: valley folds and mountain folds. Once you've cut all the pieces, you can start folding. It's also a good idea to listen to some music or to watch a movie as you're cutting so that you're brain doesn't explode from sheer boredom. Just cut precisely along the straight black lines, being careful not to accidentally cut the dotted lines. I used scissors, but an X-acto knife might be helpful for cutting out the smaller pieces. Once the template is scaled to your liking, you can print it out onto your cardstock, and you're ready to start cutting.Ĭutting out the template was pretty easy, it just took a while for me to cut out all 20 pages worth of pieces. I found that the template was the perfect size, but if you have a larger cranium you might want to scale it up a bit. Once you've downloaded the template and have it open in Pepakura designer, you can scale it by going to 2d menu > Change scale> Set Scale. I think there was probably a reason for Spacecowboy not including them, but I don't know why. This template is missing some glue tabs though, so you'll have to make some when you start gluing. I used Spacecowboy's template, which seems to be one of the more popular templates on the web. There are a few online, so just do a quick google search and you'll find something. Next, find a Stormtrooper helmet template to print out. You can get a free trial of the program that includes nearly all of the features. First, download Pepakura Designer, which will let you open and print out the template that you'll use to make the helmet. To start, you'll need to download a couple of things. If you ever wanted to get up close and personal with MS Dhoni the person, this is the film to watch. While it may not draw on major insights into Dhoni's cricketing career, it does make for a compelling story through his personal life. MS Dhoni: The Untold Story is a long film but it does well to both entertain and engage its audience despite its length. Disha Patani though, does stand out with her screen presence. The heroines Disha Patani and Kiara Advani only come up in the second half and both ladies have marginal roles. Supporting performances by Anupam Kher, Bhumika Chawla, Rajesh Sharma and Kumud Mishra are perfectly adequate. Sushant Singh Rajput's efforts alone make the movie worth a watch. His cricketing shots and his body language are a masterclass. He lives the part and makes Dhoni come alive. Not some actor trying to be a cricketer and a confident but restrained man. With every passing minute all you feel is that you're actually watching Mahendra Singh Dhoni. The biggest contributor to the impact of the film though is its lead Sushant Singh Rajput. The visual effects quality on offer is top notch all through. Mention must also be made of the superb use of CGI in transferring Sushant Singh Rajput's face onto real-life footage of Dhoni. His efforts, especially with detailed production design and screenplay writing make even the 190 minutes seem balanced and nimble. Director Neeraj Pandey crafts an engaging story with Dhoni's life. While MS Dhoni the film does not have the all-rounder ability of the person it's inspired from, it excels within its limitations. The focus is kept solely on a small town guy hitting it big on a global stage. You never quite get intimate with India's most successful cricket captain. There is a brief mention of his aggressive selection policies, but everything else from his professional life is just conveniently omitted. It just breezes through Dhoni's cricketing life keeping focus on his romances and humility rather than his involvement in the politics of cricket. The second half though is an all new ball game. It makes its play on the fact that dreaming big is okay and that achieving dreams doesn't need miracles. It gives you a genuine and insightful peek into the life of an aspiring cricketer. The film's setup does justice to that fact. In reality, Dhoni is perceived as a simple and humble man, despite his herculean achievement and talents. The chances don't come easy and the travails of a small town boy trying to live his dream make the first half of MS Dhoni authentic and genuinely fascinating. His lower middle-class family does everything in their power to make Dhoni an international cricketer. As he grows up, so does the imminent wait for his big break. His prodigious talent makes him an instant favourite in the local circles. The first half is set in '80s and '90s Ranchi as a bright-eyed Dhoni discovers the trappings of cricket over football. The story kicks off with MS Dhoni's birth and goes all the way up to his winning six in the 2011 World Cup final. It always manages to draw you in and that's not such a bad feat. At 190 minutes (a staggering 3+ hours) the movie does take its time. But the personal story of MS Dhoni, combined with director Neeraj Pandey's no nonsense approach to filmmaking does give you a decent watch. But the film does not touch upon a cricketer, his journey through dressing rooms and pitches and definitely not his conflicts or controversies. Mahendra Singh Dhoni's personal life has been depicted with detail, even his reported shy and aloof nature has been drawn out on the big screen to good effect. What the movie doesn't do is get intimate. The second half portrays him as an achiever and a lover. The first half establishes Dhoni as a character, a person and a boy who dreams big and hits bigger. The film reserves to contrasting halves for its storytelling effort. The untold story of an Indian cricketing legend, under whom the Indian cricket team ascended from being good to great. MS Dhoni: The Untold Story is a biopic that promises to give you never-heard-before details about an Indian sporting hero. "I wanted to make not a war movie, but an adventure movie, with a huge, romantic sense of adventure, a sense of grandeur, and operatic battles." - Guillermo Del Toro. Together, they stand as mankind's last hope against the mounting apocalypse. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes-a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)-who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity's resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, The official novelization of the upcoming sci-fi blockbuster Pacific Rim from visionary director Guillermo del Toro!

Their debut album Enter The Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) is an absolute Hip Hop classic, as are most of the clan members solo albums released in the mid-90s. By 1995, the sound was one of the most instantly recognizable in Hip Hop. Over these surrealistic backing tracks, the MCs rapped hard, updating the old-school attack with vicious violence, martial arts imagery, and welcome warped humor. Under RZA‘s creative direction, the Wu-Tang Clan - through its own efforts and the solo projects, all of which RZA produced or co-produced - created a hazy, surreal, and menacing soundscape out of hardcore beats, eerie piano riffs, and minimal samples. From the get-go Wu-Tang Clan’s intention was to establish themselves as a group first and then begin to profile themselves by doing solo projects, becoming a major force in the rap game as time progressed – a plan they pulled off flawlessly. RZA quickly joined the crew, as did 6 other rappers from their area: Method Man, Ghostface Killah, Raekwon, U-God, Inspectah Deck, and Masta Killa. It all started in the early 90s when GZA teamed up with longtime friend Ol’ Dirty Bastard, to start a crew that would evolve into the Wu-Tang Clan. The Wu-Tang Clan arguably is THE most influential and successful Hip Hop collective ever. |
